My proposal
The Dean Kyle Show
My group’s idea is a to create parody of the popular TV show ‘Jeremy Kyle’ using stories from a selection of famous TV shows including: ‘Jessica Jones’ ‘Doctor Who’ ‘ Game of Thrones’ ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘The Walking Dead’. It’s aim is to be funny and take issues that come up in the shows to then discuss on the Dean Kyle show.
The premier will be on YouTube and it will be transmedia; we will have merchandise, Facebook and Twitter pages, and hopefully a video game to go with the show. Our demographic will be teenagers and people in their early twenties as this is the audience who are most likely to recognise the shows we are parodying and will be actively on social media and YouTube.
We will be acting in it - I will play Dean Kyle - and we will also look for actors and actresses to play some of the parts.
The piece will be episodic, rather than one long piece, in order to stay true to the ‘Jeremy Kyle’ style and so that we can release an episode at a time on the YouTube channel to keep interest up. We will film all of the footage at the same time and then edit this down into episodes. Each TV show will have it’s own episode.
Focus group
What I learned from the focus group- (07/01/16)
Our focus group was made up of both female and male participants, and ages ranging from 16 years and 19 years. They told us to change the name from The TV Parody to the Dean Kyle Show. They liked the overall idea and they thought it would be funny if it is done well. They gave us ideas for a second season, like Eastenders, Orange is the New Black and Daredevil. Judging by the amount that they liked the idea, this is the demographic that we will be aiming this show towards - late teens and early 20s.
Focus group feedback- Number 2- (14/01/16)
The focus group really liked the name we chose. The group really liked our concept. One problem with the idea was that around half the group hadn't heard of Jessica Jones so this is something we may need to look in to. The group pointed out that we will have to consider the copyright issues with using the shows characters, logos and theme music. The group would like to see the following programs in the next season: Sherlock and Orange is the new black. All of the group love comedy show especially sitcoms instead of chat shows. Majority of the group used YouTube but were unsure about whether or not they would watch a series on it so this is something we need to think about.
Similar concepts already out there
I have researched in to similar concepts already out there and I came across "Jon Culshaw" in "Dead Ringers" . Jon Culshaw mocks Jeremy Kyle by picking up on Jeremy Kyle's style and habits and exaggerates them. The difference between Dean Ringers and my show is that I am using existing well-known TV characters and they will discuss the fictional issues they have in the shows they star in, something that Dead Ringers does not do, which makes my show unique.
